Smart home questions, answered
What is a smart home, and what does it actually do?
A smart home is one where lighting, air conditioning, shutters, security and irrigation are connected to a single control layer and work together. Instead of operating each system separately, the home responds to scenarios, such as leaving the house, evening, or coming back from a holiday, and adjusts itself without you having to think about it.
What is the difference between a smart home and a smart electrical system?
A smart electrical system is the infrastructure: controlled circuits, controllers in the panel, and the ability to operate any point remotely. A smart home is what is built on top of it: the integration between the systems and the scenarios that connect them. You can have a smart electrical system without a smart home, but not the other way round.
How much does a smart home cost?
A basic wireless system for lighting and air conditioning starts at around ₪15,000. A comprehensive system for a private house, covering lighting, shutters, air conditioning, audio and security, usually costs between ₪80,000 and ₪150,000. The difference comes from the scope of control and the type of infrastructure, not from the price of the equipment.
Wired or wireless: which is better?
In a new build or a major renovation, wired KNX infrastructure is usually the right long-term investment. In an existing home where you would rather not open the walls, a wireless system gives almost the same scope of control with far less work. The choice depends on the condition of the property and the planning horizon.
When should planning start?
Before the concrete is poured and before the electrical work begins. At that stage, deciding where the points go, the conduits and the size of the panel costs almost nothing. Planning late means compromises or expensive remedial work.
How is ACCORTO different from a company that sells systems?
We do not represent any brand. We design, install and supervise the system, and choose equipment by what suits the home, including combining different brands in one system. That is also why we do a great deal of restoration work on systems installed by others.
Can an existing home become a smart home?
Yes. A wireless system is installed on the existing electrical wiring, inside the wall boxes and the panel, without chasing or breaking walls. In a standard apartment, installation takes one to three days and can be done while you live there.
