Smart home consulting and design: questions, answered
What does a smart home consultant actually do?
A smart home consultant translates the way you live into a technical plan: how many control points you need, which systems have to talk to each other, which technology suits the property, and what a realistic budget is. The result is a specification that can be priced and built from.
When is the best time to start planning a smart home?
Before the electrical work starts, and ideally before the concrete is poured. At that stage you can fix point locations, lay dedicated conduits and plan a panel of the right size, at almost no extra cost.
What is the difference between an electrical consultant and a smart home consultant?
An electrical consultant designs the electrical system itself: loads, circuits, protection and compliance with the standard. A smart home consultant designs the control layer that runs on top of it: which circuits are controlled, how they are grouped into scenes and how the systems interface. On a good project the two work together.
Will you also sell me the system at the end?
We can also carry out the work, but the consulting stands on its own. Some clients take the design from us and build with someone else, and that is perfectly fine. That is exactly why our equipment recommendations are not influenced by who represents the brand.
What do you get at the end of the consulting stage?
A complete technical specification: control points by room, the type of control at each point, infrastructure requirements, a recommendation for wired or wireless technology, and a detailed budget estimate by item. With this document you can compare quotes like for like.
How much does consulting and early design cost?
The cost depends on the size of the property and the scope of the systems. On the projects we have guided, consulting is the item with the highest return: it usually saves more than it costs, simply because it prevents budget overruns and work being done twice.
